Ever since summer started, our friend Emily has been trying to get the group together for a big BBQ.  But, somehow there was always something in the way.  It was too hot.  It was too rainy.  Everyone was broke.  People were out of town.  But, since Emily and her hubby Niko will be moving to Poland very soon, it was time to put the excuses aside.  Today it was hot AND rainy, but we had a BBQ darn it, and it was a fine event after all!

Chicken, grill-cheese, sausages wrapped in bacon, brats, bacon steaks, burgers, ribs and (not pictured) beef steaks were on the menu.

Marc and his family were our hosts in their lovely home in Auenheim.  This is the same town where we stayed when we first arrived in Germany all those many months ago.  In fact, Marc’s house is just down the street from our temporary home!  He has two small ones with a visiting cousin and lives right next door to his parents- who also came over to be social.  The cousin and her parents live in the Netherlands, so we had even more countries represented than usual!  There was a swimming pool, a trampoline, swings, an amazing garden, and plenty of pleasant conversation.  What could be better?

Broken Chair

3-legged chair awaiting disposal

The only major kink was when I turned around to look at something behind me.  The leg on the chair I was sitting on caught and crumbled.  The chair and I both spun slowly to the ground in what I am assured was a fabulously graceful ballet of awkward collapse.  I was pretty well mortified.  But, then, I am sort of used to that these days!  I was quickly reseated in a sturdier chair and the festivities resumed.  DD later pronounced that “It could have happened to any of the larger people there, Mom”  Thanks, kid.  Keepin’ it real.

After that things flowed along amiably.  Much food was eaten (see photos), many stories were swapped, much trampoline bouncing resulted in- no one throwing up!  Woot!  There were some guest appearances by some biting flies, but bug spray (and David’s thick leg hair) sent them away.  There was an amazing Strawberry Vodka drink that I definitely should not learn to make at home.  DS got a little bored when it looked like no one was left to trampoline with him, but just then the little girls finished up their supper and decided it was Bounce Time!  DS was exhausted and happy by the time we needed to head home.  Unfortunately, my energy wall got hit just about the time the ice cream and yogurt desserts came out.  Next time I will save some stamina for more eating :)

Here is a sampling of our event.

  1. I hope you followed your liver diet. It looks like a heck of a good time!

  2. It does indeed look like you guys had a great time.

AND, it’s not a real German BBQ without a summer.
